Published

on

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is in the spotlight as he openly claims to have bought ODM leader Raila Odinga’s support.

This controversial strategy aims to dodge impeachment threats while he insists on focusing on fulfilling his promises to Nairobi residents.

Recent reports from Kenya Insights indicate that Sakaja has spent millions to win over Raila.

This decision follows his shift in allegiance to Raila to prevent being ousted by the Nairobi City County Assembly.

Governor Sakaja: Bribery and Financial Investment

Sakaja boasts of investing over Sh500 million to secure Raila’s backing, referring to him as “Super MCA.” With Raila’s support, Sakaja believes he can maintain peace among ODM members who are receiving updates directly from Raila.

Bribery Allegations
Sources suggest that Sakaja has prepared a list of MCAs he intends to bribe with amounts between Sh20,000 and Sh30,000 to avert his impeachment. His close advisor, Osman Khalif Abdi, along with former MCA and Chief of Staff David Njoroge, is reportedly behind this plan.

Sakaja’s Identity Controversy
Sakaja claims to identify as Luhya, even though his ID states he is Koskei. He is actually a Saboat, a Kalenjin subgroup, with a Luhya mother. His father, John Sakaja, served as the former treasurer of the now-defunct Kenya Football Federation.

Sakaja’s decision to replace Luhya official Patrick Akivaga Analo with Kikuyu Godfrey Akumali as acting county boss has stirred anger among Luhya MCAs. While Akumali has a Luhya mother, his Kikuyu background raises questions among Luhya constituents.

Reports indicate that Sakaja’s heavy-handed tactics have frustrated officials like Musumba and Akivaga. During meetings at his private offices, there were claims of misconduct, further straining relationships within his party.

Targeting Key Communities
Sakaja’s strategy appears to focus on communities with significant influence in the county assembly. He plans to address concerns from Luhyas, Kambas, and friendly Luo MCAs before engaging with Kikuyu MCAs, many of whom support Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Seeking Support from Raila
Similar to how Raila previously aided President William Ruto during a crisis, Sakaja now looks to Raila for help in navigating impeachment threats. However, Sakaja’s ongoing academic issues raise concerns about his stability as governor.

Impeachment Threats Persist
Despite Sakaja’s efforts, many Nairobi ward leaders are eager to see him impeached. Influential figures, including MCA Oscar Otieno, are reportedly planning to oust him. Recently, Sakaja’s outreach to MCAs has met with indifference, with Deputy Minority Leader Waithera Chege claiming they have ample grounds for impeachment.

As the political tension in Nairobi rises, the list of MCAs Sakaja is attempting to bribe includes notable names such as Suleiman Malenya (Kangemi) and Alvin Olando (Kitisuru). With Sakaja’s future uncertain, the unfolding situation continues to attract significant attention from the public and media alike.
