Rebecca Miano Declines Ruto’s Nomination As Attorney General
Former Trade CS Rebecca Miano has declined her nomination for the position of Attorney General.
According to media sources, she has asked President William Ruto to assign her lighter duties. This comes amid heightened speculations about her name missing from the list of cabinet secretaries that Ruto had presented to the National Assembly for vetting.
Other sources also attribute Miano’s withdrawal from public outcry. Professionals in the judiciary had called her out following the nomination, citing her lack of experience in the legal field. Despite being a lawyer, she has not been actively practicing law.
Nominees to the the office of AG are required to have atleast a minimum of 15 years in practicing law.
Rebeca’s move however appears to be an afterthought fearing possible embarrassment during vetting process which MPs have vowed to make sure is thorough are has been most likely allocated a different slot in the cabinet.
The former Trade CS had already expressed gratitude towards her nomination to the AG post.
“I thank H.E Dr William Ruto for nominating me to the role of Attorney General of the Republic. Granted the opportunity, I promise to apply myself fully to the tasks attached to that solemn office with my focus being on serving the people of my beloved motherland with utmost dedication, humility and a listening ear. God will be my helper,” Miano said.
On Sunday, Miano also posted an appreciation message on her official X account, discussing second chances.
“Life is full of second chances. When they come be more appreciative, intentional, courageous, hard-working, and humble. Bleesed Sunda,” she said.
Duale reassigned
In another surprising move, nominated Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale Bare has been reassigned and moved from the Ministry of Defence to the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry.
Soipan Tuya who served in the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry has been nominated as Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Defence.
The swap of roles was revealed by National Assembly Speaker Moses Masika Wetang’ula on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, when the Parliament sessions resumed.
Duale and Soipan were among the 11 members who were nominated by President Ruto following the dismissal of the Cabinet.
Nominees from the immediate past Cabinet are Prof Kithure Kindiki (Interior and National Administration), Alice Wahome (Lands, Public Works, Urban Development and Housing), and Davis Chirchir (Roads and Transport).
The new faces nominated to Cabinet are Dr Debra Mulongo Barasa (Health), Mr Julius Migosi Ogamba (Education), Dr Andrew Mwihia Karanja (Agriculture and Livestock Development), Mr Eric Muriithi Muuga (Water, Sanitation and Irrigation) and Ms Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u (Information, Communication and Digital Economy).
