A Kenyan man living in the US has run into trouble following a viral video on TikTok after he shredded his American passport in a live stream to his fans.

Benson Gitau, who has been living in the US for over a decade, recently announced plans to relocate back home saying he had accomplished much abroad and was ready to settle down back home and enjoy his time.

Gitau in the previous video that also went viral claimed the life abroad isn’t as fancy as many perceive it and he was done with it.

To prove his point that he’s done, Gitau destroyed his American passport.

Reacting to a follower who dared him to denounce his American citizenship, Gitau went ahead and filmed himself destroying the passport in a paper shredder machine.

“Its interesting because so many people see that we are clout chasing over here. This is my US passport, and this is my Kenyan passport. Let me show you a picture and details and see that the expiry date is 2032,” he’s heard saying in the video.

Regrets

In a follow up video, Gitau has now come out to apologize following a backlash against his action both from family and online users who’ve suspected his going through a mental meltdown perhaps from his military experience.

“It was a mistake, I shouldn’t have done that that was an old passport but looking back concerned family and friends have tried to reach out to my wife and me,” Gitau now says.

“I thought I was doing a prank, but I realised it was just clout chasing, I don’t want to do that again I apologise to my family, my wife, and my son and I will take a break from posting here on TikTok,” he added.

It’s not the family alone that he could be in trouble with but the The Department of State that will require convincing reason for renewal.

While it’s not illegal, if you destroy your expired passport you have to renew your passport in person, when you could’ve just mailed it in along with your renewal application.

Gitau has been living in the US for over 13 years after winning the Green Card lottery and served in the US Marine where he was deployed to the war-toned Afghanistan for over an year before quitting.

He now wants to relocate back to Kenya which he describes as ‘the future’.
